As part of our none school Alternate Provision at Chances Mentoring, we believe every child deserves to feel confident, valued, and supported. Our Primary Provision is designed to help children build the skills and self-belief they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

We focus on:

  • Growing self-esteem and confidence through positive, supportive mentoring.

  • Building resilience and encouraging a hopeful, positive outlook.

  • Tailored mentoring programmes – offering hands-on, activity-based sessions for children who learn best through doing, as well as structured tutoring for those who benefit from extra academic support.

  • Therapeutic support to help children with their wellbeing, emotions, and mental health.

  • Outdoor learning opportunities that encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and a deeper connection with nature.

By combining mentoring, learning, and therapeutic support, we give children the tools to succeed, both personally and academically, while making sure they feel safe, encouraged, and understood.

What This Looks Like in Practice:

Mentoring & Confidence Building

  • One-to-one or small group mentoring sessions where children set personal goals.

  • Confidence-boosting activities such as presenting their work, sharing successes, or leading a group game.

  • Positive role-modelling and daily check-ins to help children feel listened to and valued.

Building Resilience & Positivity

  • Activities that encourage problem-solving and “having another go” when something feels challenging.

  • Reflection sessions to celebrate progress and talk about overcoming difficulties.

  • Encouraging positive mindset through affirmations, journaling, or circle-time discussions.

Tailored Learning Programmes

  • Activity-based learning: cooking, gardening, crafts, sports, and team-building challenges.

  • Academic support: personalised tutoring in English and Maths, small group literacy/numeracy activities, structured learning games.

  • Flexible timetables so children get the right balance between hands-on activities and focused study.

Therapeutic Support

  • Access to wellbeing sessions (e.g. mindfulness, art therapy style activities, sensory play).

  • Space to talk through worries with trained staff in a safe and calm environment.

  • Emotional regulation strategies like “calm corners,” breathing exercises, and structured routines.

Outdoor Learning

  • Forest school-inspired sessions: den-building, bug hunts, nature trails.

  • Team challenges such as building shelters or outdoor problem-solving games.

  • Gardening projects to learn responsibility, teamwork, and care for the environment.

  • Physical activities like orienteering, outdoor PE, and nature-based play.
